How do I register for the Kaslo Wild Ultra?

What is the terrain like?

53 km – The Mountain Stage:
Expect rugged mountain terrain — rocky, rooty, and potentially muddy if the weather turns wet. The course includes 2 km of road at the start and 2 km at the finish, 2 km of old logging road, and the rest is glorious single track winding up and down Mount Buchanan.

22 km – The River Stage:
A pure single-track experience through lush forest and riverside trails. Flowing, technical, and full of character.

10 km – The Lake Stage:
A fun mix of single track and wide gravel trails, with about 1.5 km on the road. Smooth, scenic, and the perfect way to kick off the weekend.

Are there aid stations along the trail?

Yes, the Mountain Stage has 4 aid stations stocked with essentials at key points and 2 water station with drop bags. Runners MUST check in at each Aid/Water station or risk being disqualified.

#1 Pandemic Aid Station - 7 KM - 740 metres of elevation

# 2 Bucky Aid Station - 23 KM - 1359 metres of elevation

#3 Buckshot Water Station and Drop Bags - 25 km - 1592 metres of elevation (runners will pass this station on the way up and down)

#4 Buchanan Peak Aid Station - 31 KM - 2108 metres elevation

#5 Water Station and Drop Bags - 39 KM - 2120 metres of elevation (runners will pass this station on the way up and down)

#6 Bucky Aid Station - 41 KM - 2126 metres of elevation

There will be two aid stations for the River Stage.

For the 53 km it is mandatory to bring:

What distances are available?

Participants can sign up for the Full Wild (3 days, 85 Km of amazing trails) or sign up for a single race.

  • 10 KM - Tour around the charming village of Kaslo and area with a few hills sprinkled in.

  • 53 KM - Ultra Marathon on some of Kaslo's best trails that take runner's through lush temperate rainforests with incredible mountain views

  • 22 KM - A classic loop that takes runners along the much loved River Trails and True Blue trail network.

  • 85 KM - All three distances on all three days.

  • 32 KM - The Lake Stage (Friday) and the River Stage (Sunday).

Can I split/share my race entry with another person?

No, each participant that registers for the Full Wild (all three days) must run all the days themselves. We offer the option for participants to register individually for each race.

Are there time limits?

  • Day 1 – Race will begin at 3:00 PM. Cut off time is 6:00 PM.

  •  Day 2 – Race will begin at 6:00 AM.

 Are there drop bags?

Yes! Drop bags are available for runners participating in the Mountain Stage 53 km. Please drop your bag off on Friday evening during race check-in. Make sure your bag is clearly labeled with your name and bib number that we provide.

Drop bags will be transported to Buckshot water station and returned to the finish area after the race. We recommend using a weather-resistant bag and packing only essential items — the terrain can be rugged and conditions unpredictable.

 Can I wear headphones?

We do not allow headphones to be worn during the race for safety reasons and to help everyone stay fully aware of their surroundings. The course includes rugged backcountry trails, wildlife zones, and several road crossings where being able to hear traffic, volunteers, and fellow runners is essential. Staying alert helps ensure a safer race for everyone—and lets you take in the raw beauty of the wild terrain around you.

We’re thrilled to welcome Mel Spooner of Endurance Health and Fitness (EHF) to the Kaslo Wild Ultra team. Mel brings decades of elite-level experience and an unstoppable passion for endurance sport. From setting age group records to standing on the podium as a 3-time Ironman Champion and finishing 4th at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Mel knows what it takes to dig deep and chase bold goals. Now based in Kaslo, Mel has been coaching athletes since 2006, helping individuals tap into their potential and thrive in the world of endurance sport. Her approach is grounded in community, consistency, and a deep understanding of what it takes to push beyond limits. Whether you're training for your first ultra or aiming for the podium at your next 100K, Mel brings a wealth of experience and a supportive, athlete-centered coaching style to help you get there. Colleen o'brien

Hi, I’m Colleen. I have been a UESCA (United Endurance Sports Coaching Academy) certified running and ultra running since since 2019. I also have a background in Pilates. Since my first trail marathon in 2018, I have fallen in love with trail and ultra running., completing multiple ultras and stage races throughout BC. I spend much of my time running, hiking and exploring the mountains around me. I love working with clients and help them find their passion for trail running, work towards their big goals, and share all the ups and downs along the way. Kaslo Wild Ultra Terms and Conditions

1. Participation in the Kaslo Wild Ultra

  • Inherent Risks: Participation in trail running events, off-trail races, mountain running, or race training clinics carries inherent risks. By registering, participants confirm that they are physically capable of participating, have the necessary gear, and agree to follow all event rules.

  • Medical Clearance: Registrants should seek medical advice if they have any doubts about their physical ability to participate.

  • Start Numbers: Participants must mount their start numbers on their shorts or tops so they are visible and must not alter them in any way.

  • Start Time: The start staging begins 20 minutes before the scheduled start time, with a daily briefing starting 15 minutes prior. The start will remain open for up to 5 minutes after the designated start time.

  • Race Director's Authority: The race directors at Kaslo Wild Ultra (KWU) reserve the right to refuse or withdraw any participant if there are concerns about their health and safety.

  • Risks Assumed by Participants: Participants acknowledge the risks associated with the event, including dehydration, hypothermia, falls, poor weather, animal encounters, vehicle traffic, and interaction with other participants.

  • Waiver Requirement: A signed waiver is required before participation. Minors may only participate with a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.

  • Disqualification: KWU reserves the right to disqualify any participant who violates the rules, engages in unsportsmanlike behavior, or endangers themselves or others.

  • Withdrawal: If a participant cannot continue or wishes to withdraw, they must immediately inform the race organizers at the start, checkpoints, or finish line, or call the emergency phone number (780-931-5007). Participants who withdraw or fail to complete the race must notify officials as soon as possible.

  • Insurance: Non-Canadian participants must obtain sufficient insurance coverage before the event if they are not covered by Canadian public healthcare.

2. Use of Images

  • Rights to Media: KWU retains the right to use any photographs or video recordings of participants or spectators taken during the event, for promotional purposes in print and digital media, without compensation to the individuals involved.

3. Course Marking and Navigation

  • Course Marking: The course is marked with flagging tape and arrow signs. Participants must stay on the marked course. If a runner strays from the route, they must return to where they left it or face a penalty.

  • Short Cutting: Short cutting or deviating from the course is prohibited. Participants must return to the exact point where they left the course.

4. Prizes and Gifts

  • Changes in Prizes: Prizes and race gift items are sponsored and may be subject to change without prior notice due to availability. KWU reserves the right to cancel prizes if items are no longer available.

5. Payment

  • Registration Confirmation: Registrants are not considered fully registered until payment is received. If payment is not completed at the time of registration, the registration may be canceled.

6. Registration Fees

  • Price Changes: KWU reserves the right to modify the event pricing at any time without notice. Registrants who have already paid will not be subject to any increase in fees due to changes in pricing.

7. Registration Numbers

  • Capacity Limits: KWU reserves the right to change the registration limit for an event without notice.

8. Refund, Cancellation, and Withdrawal Policy

  • Non-Refundable Fee: A 10% non-refundable fee applies to all event entries.

  • Withdrawal Options:

  • 90% Refund: Available if withdrawal occurs by April 30 of the event year.

  • 75% Deferral: Available if withdrawal occurs up to 60 days before the event, for deferral to the following year's event (no deferrals beyond the next calendar year).

9. Pregnancy Cancellation Policy

  • Notification: Participants must notify event organizers at least two weeks before the event if they cannot attend due to pregnancy-related reasons via email or the official cancellation platform. A doctor's note or supporting documentation is required to verify the pregnancy-related reason for cancellation.

  • Full Refund: If notification is received within the required timeframe.

  • Partial Refund: May be offered if the cancellation occurs within two weeks of the event, depending on the circumstances.

  • Health and Safety: Participants should consult with a healthcare provider before making the decision to race.

  • Force Majeure: If pregnancy-related issues arise unexpectedly, alternative solutions may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

10. Event Cancellation or Rescheduling

  • Unforeseen Circumstances: If the event is canceled or rescheduled due to events beyond control (e.g., forest fires, flooding, disease, acts of war, or government directives), KWU is not obligated to offer refunds or deferrals. Alternative compensation may be provided at the discretion of the organizers.

  • Travel and Expenses: Participants are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, and other expenses incurred due to event cancellation.

  • Refund Process: Refunds will be issued to the original payment method. If that is not possible, the refund will be sent via e-transfer to the original payer or an authorized recipient.

  • Travel and Accommodation Responsibility: Participants are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, and related expenses.

11. Registration Changes and Transfers

  • Transfer Policy: Registrants may transfer their entry to another individual or modify their registration up to 14 days before the race.

  • Refunds for Team Member Removals: Refunds will be provided according to the Refund, Cancellation, and Withdrawal Policy.

12Aid Station Check-In Requirement

  • For the safety of all participants, runners must check in at every aid station along the course. Race officials and volunteers will record each runner’s bib number and time. This ensures that all participants are accounted for throughout the event.

  • Failure to check in at any aid station — whether intentional or accidental — will result in disqualification from the event. This rule is strictly enforced to maintain runner safety and accurate race tracking.

13. Environmental Responsibility

  • Penalties for Environmental Abuse: Littering, cutting trails, or damaging the environment will incur stiff penalties. The first offense results in a one-hour time penalty, and the second offense leads to disqualification.

  • Trail Etiquette: Participants must stay on the established trail. Cutting switchbacks or corners will be penalized as shortcutting.

  • Human Waste: Solid human waste must be collected in a plastic bag if no toilet is available, and the bag should be disposed of at the finish.
